Four All Natural Rug Cleaning Alternatives
We often joke about having a floor so clean you can eat off of it. So why do we first turn to the heavy-duty chemical solutions to clean them?
Sometimes your rugs will need a heavy-duty solution. But for many small, everyday stains, there are a ton of all natural, rug cleaning alternatives you can employ instead. Here are a few you should know about.
Just Plain Hot Water
It’s a myth that your steam cleaner (if you have one) needs to use a highly concentrated cleaner to get the job done. To give your rug or carpet a refresh, simple H2O will get rid of a lot of the dirt and debris without leaving any chemical residue behind. While this isn’t going to be effective with difficult stains, it’s perfect for a general uplift.
Baking Soda
If your rug or carpet is getting a little smelly, try sprinkling baking soda on it. Baking soda is extremely effective at absorbing odors. Once you’ve sprinkled a fine layer over your rug, wait a few hours, then vacuum it up. You can also pre-treat stains with baking soda, which will soak up spills and make the area easier to clean.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural oxidizer, allowing it to break up blood more effectively than soap or typical cleaners can. For tough blood stains, use a hydrogen peroxide solution to dab the area, then use cold water to remove it completely. Hot water is your enemy here: it will cause the stain to set. Keep in mind that you should always test a hidden corner of your rug or carpet to make sure these solutions won’t cause it to spot or bleach.
Vinegar
Vinegar has seen a powerful resurgence in the home rug cleaning market lately thanks to its natural ability as a strong acid to kill bacteria. Mix 32 ounces of water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar for a spray solution that will work on simple spills (such as soda, beer or mud). Dealing with a wine stain? Combine vinegar and baking soda together for a natural deep-clean solution.
